A 4-H Educator will visit your classroom with an hour lesson and, in most instances, a hands-on project.

NUTRITION

Mystery Box - Julie Curren

Children participate in a hands-on study of the current FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID. Games and discussion help children explore how to make better choices for healthy living.  A healthy "try it" snack provided at the end.

 

 Food, Fitness and Fun - Julie Curren

Grades 3-6
1 class per program; Curriculum extensions supplied; 1 hour program

A healthy lifestyle includes good eating habits as well as physical activity.  Upper elementary students will join in a discussion of the current food guide pyramid.  Through the use of heart rate monitors they can determine which types of exercise help to maintain a healthy heart and body.

TECHNOLOGY

GPS Basics - Julie Curren

available  May 1 - May 25

Grades 3-6
2 classes per program; 1-2 parent helpers; 1 hour program

A hands-on introduction to GPS units and usage.  An indoor discussion leads to an outdoor adventure on school grounds.  Each child uses a hand held unit to find their path from waypoint to waypoint.  Longitude, latitude and basic map skills addressed.

AGRICULTURE

During the week of March 14th - 18th (National Ag Week), volunteers throughout the state will go into classrooms to read a book with an agricultural theme, lead an activity based on the book and talk to students about agriculture.  The book will be donated to the school library.

Birds in Your Backyard - Julie Curren

In a center-based program utilizing interactive games children learn about bird's specialized body parts and identify common winter birds and their songs.  Make a bird food necklace to feed the birds in YOUR backyard.

 

Can You Dig It? - Julie Curren

Grades K-2
1 class per program; Parent helpers needed; Curriculum extensions supplied; 1 hour program

A hands-on in-depth look at soil, seeds, and techniques used in gardening.  Children will plant their own seeds. Please have a broom accessible.

 

Monarchs in the Classroom - Julie Curren

School Year 2010-2011              available Sept.28 -Oct. 31

Grades 1-5
2 classes per program; TV and VCR needed; Curriculum extensions supplied; 1 hour program

Get monarch larvae to raise in the classroom.  An Educator comes to the classroom and shows a movie from the larvae's perspective, leads an interactive age appropriate discussion about the life cycle and children participate in a physical migration game.  Children will tag and record information for University of Kansas conservation and research program. Register on the current form and specify year. Large indoor space needed in case of inclement weather. Fee: $20.00 FOR PROGRAM, $.25 per tag.

 

Bluebirds in New York ~ Julie Curren

April 19 or April 21, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Grades K-5
1 class per program; parent helpers needed; Curriculum extensions supplied; Field Trip

Come to the 4-H Training Center for a Bluebird Conservation Workshop.  Get information, see a movie, walk the 4-H Bluebird Trail, view nesting pairs and build a Bluebird Nest Box to take home. 3 Nest Boxes included with the program.  Bring a bag lunch and eat with the birds. FEE: $20/classroom   Additional Nest Box Kits $10 or 3 for $25

This program provides an opportunity for students to experience the incubation, development, hatching and brooding or chicks.

Fee: $20 deposit for incubator, $10 non-refundable service fee and $8 per dozen eggs.

HERITAGE

Through a Child's Eyes ~ Julie Curren

Grades 4-6
1 class per program; 1 hour program

A child's perspective of school, home, work, play and other aspects of daily life in the 1800's.  Presenter comes in costume with a life size board game, one room schoolhouse props, as well as a chest of heritage toys.  Children will make a toy of their own to keep.

 

EARTH SCIENCE

Sciencing with Seismology ~ Julie Curren

A hands-on program consisting of learning about seismic waves, seismographs, and designing structures in different ground conditions.  Students will work in groups to discover seismology.
