YardWorks, a Landscape Design Opportunity

Josh Cerra, Assistant Professor Cornell University Landscape Architecture will detail efforts in two communities developing greener landscape design solutions using a combination of urban ecological design strategies as well as yard designs that accommodate land owners intentions while meeting environmental objectives. He will share specific examples including creating bird-friendly habitat for professionals that want to embrace these strategies in their clients’ landscapes. These design solutions offer another product for firms wishing to expand on the ‘green’ theme.http://yardworksithaca.wordpress.com/

Be Green Organic Yards New York & Child Safe Playing Field Act

Martin Williams, Department of Environmental Conservation, Pesticide Compliance Section in Albany will discuss details of the framework of this Be Green Organic Yards NY program which is a means to promote organic landscape management, and provide a means to educate and increase awareness of homeowners and pest management providers about organic landscape management. A Be Green Organic Yards NY Businesses will sign a service mark agreement with the Department for the right to use the Be Green service mark (logo) as a means to advertise and promote their use of organic landscape services.

Walt Nelson, Horticulture Program Leader Cornell Cooperative Extension, Monroe County will discuss the Child Safe Playing Field Act which is under the direction of the Department of Education. It prohibits the application of pesticides on playing fields and playing grounds excepting those on the EPA 25b list. He will share details on the management strategies schools are trying with this act in mind and their success.
